The Bombers have runners on second and third with one out when "Babe" McGursky hits a medium-distance fly ball to the left fielder, Pete "Pig Knuckles" Popovich. The runner on third base, Wally "Speedy" Wingtips, in his haste to score, leaves the bag before the leftfielder (Pete), makes the catch. On the throw to the plate, however, the ball gets away from the catcher, Yogi Barefoot, and both runners score. The Bombers appeal on the first runner, who left third base early, and get the third out of the inning. Does it nullify the follow-up runner's score? YES! Since the play results in the third out, the appeal retires the side, and the run doesn't count. If it had resulted in the second, rather than the third out, the follow-up runner would not be affected, and his run would count. |
